”ATTENTION ! To whom it may concern: AT THE DRIVE-IN will be breaking their 11 year silence THIS STATION IS …NOW…OPERATIONAL,” – Offical Tweet from At the Drive-In

That’s right boys and girls, our fantasies are becoming reality.  The boys from El Paso who introduced many of us to post hardcore are reuniting after a 11 year hiatus.  Get ready for some microphone swinging, body flailing, wild guitar rifts, and one of the most intense live performances you have ever experienced.

I particularly like At The Drive-In’s announcement of their comeback, with its reference to the lyrics of One Armed Scissor off their 2000 album Relationship In Command.  You can see At The Drive-In at this years Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival April 15 & 22nd.  As of now no further announcements have been made about new albums or touring, but you can check their website for new developments.

Below is footage of At The Drive-In performing on Letterman, and their cover of The Smith’s song This Night Has Opened My Eyes to get you in the mood.

The Features have always been the apple of my eye since I first caught them in Cincinnati in 2005  playing the Turnbull AC’s album release party.  Their indie rock sound has a pure southern growl to it with lyrics that give personality and perspective to their lives as partners, parents and rock stars, and to top it off their drummer kind of reminds me of Animal from The Muppet’s when he plays live (I mean that in the very best of senses).  From Sparta, Tennessee The Features have a home grown sound that has developed from playing together since their high school youth in 1994, and put on a live show that is like no other, especially if you see them in the volunteer state.

This week The Features will be opening for the J Roddy Walston & The Business in D.C. tonight at the Rock & Roll Hotel and Philadelphia tomorrow evening (Thursday 5/5) at The North Star.  They will also play the WEQX Tulip Fest After Party this Saturday in Albany, NY and then headline a show in NYC at The Mercury Lounge on Monday, May 9th.  In release news The Features will be releasing a 7″ single entitled Rambo, with a B-side entitled This Much I Know on May 31st; two tracks that will be on their upcoming full length, Wilderness.  Now you have no excuses not to catch the boys test driving new songs in NYC.  Alright, you might get off the hook if you have tickets for the sold out James Blake at Johnny Brendas.

So all you east coast kids don’t hesitate, click this link <Boltbus.com> and do what you have to to see this show.  You know you have people in the Big Apple, so use the gig as a way to see a friend and have a rompin’ good time.

This evening at The Electric Factory (421 N 7th St, Philly) are Heartless Bastards amidst their North American tour with Wolfmother .

Showcasing their February 09′ released album The Mountain, Heartless Bastards give a sense of the influences of their new surroundings in Austin, TX where the now 3 piece reside, after moving from Cincinnati, OH in 2007.

One can feel the true comfort of vocalist Erika Wennerstrom reconnecting with founding member drummer Dave Colvin & former bassist Jessee Ebaugh as they add new instrumentation such as fiddle and banjo, and create a very nuanced sound, especially compared to their past albums All This Time or Stairs and Elevators.  Listening to the album in it’s entirety The Mountain has an almost mythical element where one’s mind unconsciously creates an epic journey that Wennerstrom’s voice takes us on.  In other words O Brother, Where At Thou-esk.

Accompanying Heartless Bastards is the Australian band Wolfmother with their male vocal counterpart Andrew Stockdale, who much like Wennerstrom is the only truent member of his band.  Their developed sound is crisp and purposeful which is a nice companion to my inner reminiscings a similar sounds of my youth in Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, Silverchair and a dash of Offspring.

Promoting their just released album Cosmis Egg this now 4 piece utilizes the addion of the keyboard to this album to create a sense of screaming over Stockdale’s guitar.

After Philadelphia, this carefully chosen pairing will play a few more shows throughout North America:

11/8  -  New York, NY (Terminal 5)

PS: According to vocalist Erika Wennerstrom, band’s name comes from a question on a Mega Touch trivia quiz game at a bar. A question asked the name of Tom Petty’s backing band, and one of the options was “Tom Petty and the Heartless Bastards.” She thought it was funny, and used it when she later formed a band.  (This according to Wikipedia dot dot dot)

PSS: Each Note Secure also has an excellent write up of Heartless Bastards album Stairs & Elevators that you can check out here… as part of their Best Of the Decade review of Cincinnati artists.
